Old Amsterdam, New Amsterdam

A collaboration between WNYC and Radio Netherlands

The historical ties between New York City and Dutch culture are hidden in plain sight. Harlem was Haarlem and Brooklyn was Breukelen. Who was Hoyt-Schermerhorn? A hundred small reminders of the regions' origins as "New Netherlands." Are there ties still binding New York and the Netherlands?

We were asking ourselves those questions, so we created "Old Amsterdam, New Amsterdam." It's a collaboration between WNYC and Radio Netherlands. Soundcheck, Radio Lab, the Brian Lehrer and Leonard Lopate Shows and WNYC's music hosts are devoting one week -- November 17-21, 2003 -- to explore the musical, cultural, political and economic connections between our cultures and the two great port cities.
